MovableTypeが無料になった
MTOS(MovableType無料版)を試してみる前に
これまで個人使用に限り無料、商用利用は有料だったMovableType(MT)の無料版(MTOS = MovableType Open Source)が出て、一部ズクダスでも話題になっている。商用だと、５万円強の費用がかかっていたモノが無料で手に入るようになったのだから、騒がれるのも無理はない か？
なぜMTは有料だったのか？
しかし、同じブログであるWordPress(WP)は最初から無料だ。ブログと同じように簡単に記事やページが作れるXOOPS、Joomla!等々のCMS(コンテンツ・マネージメント・システム)の多くも無料だ。
無料になった！と喜ぶだけでなく、なぜ今まで無料ではなかったのか？を考えてみるのも意味があるかもしれない。
MTもはじめは無料だったが、バージョン 3.0になった際に、SixApart社が有料ライセンスを始め、以降MTは有料となった。今回は単に昔に戻っただけ、あるいは他のブログソフトと同じレベルになっただけ というわけだ。
MTOSのOSはオープンソースのOS
WordPressやXOOPSなどは、販売元の会社があるわけではない。XOOPS Cube日本サイトやWordPressジャパンのサイトからダウンロードして利用できる。ところが、MTはSixApartという会社が販売を仕切っている。会社が販売しているから安心だという人もいるが、MTに比べてXOOPSやWPが不安定で信頼できない という話はあまり聞かない。販売元が会社だからといって安心できるわけでもなさそうだ。むしろソースを公開（オープンソース）し、大勢の目で評価されたほうが安心できる という判断もあるだろう。
特定の会社がソフトを仕切る というリスク
一社がソフトの開発・販売をコントロールしているということは、その会社により、価格も性能もコントロールされている と覚悟しておかなければならないということだ。
無料だったものが、ある日突然有料になったり・・・、必要でもない機能が勝手に付加されたり・・・といったことが起こり得るということだ。この点については、マイクロソフト社がすべてを制御しているWindowsやIEがどのくらい素晴らしい成果をあげているかを見れば実感できるだろう。事実、2004年のMT有料化の際は、大ブーイングが巻き起こったらしい。SixApart社は、それでも有料化に踏み切った。これがMT離れを引き起こし、日本以外ではMTは少数派となったという経緯がある。

アメリカ・ヨーロッパではMovableTypeは少数派、WordPressの利用者のほうが圧倒的に多く、日本でもWordPressが追い上げてきているらしい。
