プログラミングのお作法

プログラムにも作法があった

プログラムをつくるのに作法が必要だと思いますか？
明日東京でプログラミングの作法について話をするので、改めてプログラムと作法について考えて見ました。

自分で作って、自分で使い、自分で変更するならともかく、お仕事として作るプログラムは、長い期間にわたって使われ、自分以外の人が変更する可能性があるため、お作法が必要となります。数十行のHTMLでさえ適当に書かれたコードは見るに耐えません。時として数千行にもなるプログラムのソースが書き散らされていたら、もうこれは手のつけようがありません。

プログラミング作法のバイブル

Ｃ言語の大家であり、Ｃ言語を使う人間にとってのバイブルである「プログラミング言語Ｃ」の著者であるＢ．Ｗ．カーニハンが「プログラミング作法」という本を書いています（アスキー社刊 R.Pikeとの共著）。これもまたプログラマにとってのバイブルと言える本です。Ｃ言語をベースにJava等にも言及しながら実例をあげて作法の重要性を説いた本ですが、教科書的な「こうすべきだ！」という話ではなくて、なぜ作法が必要なのか？カーニハンはどうしているのか？が淡々と書かれています。

大家も実はテストが嫌いなのか？

プログラムの作法というと、変数には説明を入れろ！　とか、関数の名前はこう付けろ！　とか、ここには改行を入れろ！　といった、プログラムを書く際の決まり（コーディング規約といいます）についての話が多いのですが、カーニハンの本には、テストやデバッグ（プログラムのバグ＝不具合を探して修正する作業）についての話もあって、こちらの方がタメになります。ともするとプログラマはプログラムを書いたら作業が終了したような気になるものですが、実はプログラムは書く作業より、書いた後の作業、テストやデバッグの方が大変で重要なのです。と、分かっていても、テストとなると、単純で、繰り返しが多くて、ついつい敬遠しがちです。そこで大家カーニハンの言葉

テストでも最も重要なルールは、テストをすることである。

大家であるカーニハンも、本当はテストが嫌いで、できればテストしたくなかったから、こんな言葉が出てきたのでは？　そうかんぐってしまいました。しかし、この言葉の通り、テストをすることが良いプログラム作りの第一歩です。テストはしっかりやらなければ！と改めて気を引き締めております。
